Practicing Mindfulness | Crystal Dorado

Last night we had our second of five workshops for Mental Health May! Crystal Dorado and her assistant, Stella from Verde Holistic Wellness Studio, led a workshop on Mindfulness. A few members from our community came to join this exciting workshop. We began our time learning the cultural aspects of holistic practices and understanding what mindfulness is all about.

Crystal describes mindfulness as “the capacity to be fully present, aware of who we are and what we are doing, and less reactive or overwhelmed by external forces”. With this definition, she led us through practicing these moments of mindfulness. We began meditation and viewed our thoughts as if they were playing on a TV in our minds, we then attempted to turn it off and clear our thoughts. Crystal shared her Mandala beads and how to use them, as well as some beautiful clear quartz crystals and a singing crystal pyramid that produced a sound and vibrations when tapped.

We ended our session with another meditation in which we were guided through “the cosmos” and attempted to view ourselves as one with our surroundings. While everyone slowly began to go deeper into this meditation, Crystal began to chime the singing pyramid. This meditation was a way of opening up our minds to understand that we have more access to our sub-consciousness than just within our physical body. Crystal taught everyone so much and we all had a great time learning about these holistic healing practices! Food Distribution | March 2022

Every 3rd Saturday of the month, God’s Heritage Full Gospel, Impact Church, Next Generation, & TFD gather for food distribution for people within the community. We are a coalition of neighboring organizations working together to provide for our community. These distributions are so important for both families and individuals since there are no local grocery stores in the area.

This month makes 2 years since TFD began this partnership! We are thankful that we are able to serve our community and those in need. We hope to see continued growth and partnership.

Senior Stories | A Collaboration With Quinn Center

This past fall, our mentees collaborated with Quinn Center to highlight the stories of seniors in our community. Our partnership with the Quinn Center and seniors was to amplify community members’ voices. Maywood is an inter-generational community and TFD values the stories of those that have built the community up. Our mentees learned about an earlier Maywood and those that have lived here for decades. We brought in 4 community members to tell us about their journey in the Proviso District and how it has impacted them, as well as what future they hope for. Here are their stories.

Coat And Food Distribution | December

This morning, Impact Church and God’s Heritage Full Gospel Church in Maywood hosted it’s monthly food distribution! This month’s included coats, gloves, hats, and scarves in addition to all of the food. Every third Saturday of each month, the two churches join forces to make this awesome event possible. It is something special to help out the community and all of the families in Maywood. They also offer prayer for those who choose to be prayed over and everyone is incredibly kind and welcoming. It is an honor for TFD to be there to support and document something like this through photography. To check this out for yourself, you can stop by next month to God’s Heritage Full Gospel Church!

Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway & Prayer Walk

This past Saturday, Impact Church hosted their monthly prayer walk, as well as Thanksgiving meal giveaway near the Maywood Peace Garden on 17th & Madison. Impact Church does this prayer walk every month at different locations to pray over the community of Maywood for growth and a successful, healthy future. It is a very important part of what the church aspires to do to help their community and to support people within. TFD sent out Mya Rose and Saffron to document this through photo and help support the community. This prayer walk was a little different since they also had a food giveaway. They provided food and supplies that can help families for the upcoming holiday. They had a great turn out and were able to provide for so many people within Maywood. Even with the cold weather, everyone was bundled up and ready to help their community as well as being there for those in need. We can’t wait to join them for the next one!
