Maywood Haunted Trail Walk

Today, the Village of Maywood had a Haunted Trail and Trick-Or-Treat Walk, hosted by the Maywood Park District. At this event, different organizations within Maywood came together to bring awareness to their specific organization and to interact with the community. The Firehouse Dream had a section where we took photos of families and kids in their costumes. We sent out a few past mentees; Mya, Ross, and Kevyn, along with Liz, to speak to the families and to take photos and videos to document this event. It was a lot of fun and a great chance for the kids to have nice fall photos taken, as well as getting some candy! Overall, it was a great turn out and we hope to have the chance to work with some of these people again!

Podcasting: Diving Deeper

For the continuation of the podcast workshop led by Karina, the mentees dove deeper into the work it takes to create a podcast. They got a chance to record an intro and outro in a professional make-shift booth of our own. They had a lot of fun with this and created some really awesome ideas for a podcast! We hope to see where the mentees take this new knowledge and how it helps them to grow and expand on their great ideas.

Food Distribution 10/16

This past Saturday, Mya, a previous mentee, went to God’s Heritage Full Gospel Church in Maywood for a food distribution event led by Impact Church. They provided bags with hand sanitizer, cereal, bread, cookies and more! Everyone also had the opportunity to be prayed on if they chose to. This was a drive-thru type food drive to promote health and wellness and keep everyone safe. This is something the churches accomplish every third Saturday of each month. It is a great opportunity for people in the community who may need extra assistance or get groceries locally since there are no grocery stores in the area.

In this workshop led by Karina, our mentees got the opportunity to learn about podcasting. Karina has a podcast of her own where she discusses different topics with guests. They learned the basics about what a podcast is, how to create one, different topics you can make a podcast about, and more. They also learned some different platforms to post their podcasts on. Overall, this was a great chance for the mentees to learn something new and exciting about a growing field.

Today, our mentees got a lesson from Carlos Arteaga about wordmarking and Adobe Illustrator. They got to learn about different programs to make logos and the basics in adobe illustrator, like how to clean edges on a logo. The mentee used different shapes to practice these things. They also learned the differences of fonts and styles of wording that evoke different feelings about a certain brand. Next, the mentees got a chance to create their own logo with their own brand or name to put their newfound skill to practice.
