Social Media

Today, Lu’Cretia from Girl Behind The Hustle, led a workshop for our mentees about social media. She discussed the logistics of running social media accounts for a brand and how to make it easier with other apps to schedule posts and help with the editing process. She also advised our mentees that video is a main way to connect with your audience. Our mentees got to do some research for their own brands and learned how the process of creating a business goes when it comes to social media. LC had a lot of great advice to give our young adults and was very helpful in showing them creative ways to elevate their own brands. Our mentees learned a lot and we hope to work with Lu’Cretia again soon!

Healthy Relationships

What is a healthy relationship to you? Erika Perez led a workshop on this topic for our mentees today. They discussed how a relationship is not limited to a romantic relationship but can also apply to family, friends, etc. It is important to know the signs of a healthy vs. unhealthy relationship so we don’t end up in a bad situation but rather a healthy growing relationship that has a positive impact on a person’s life. In relationships, it is essential to take things step by step. Making sure to be there to listen to the other person’s boundaries, wants, and needs will help to evolve the relationship and make sure that everyone is comfortable. Trust is also a big need when it comes to relationships because without trust you cannot truly connect with someone. Mariah made a TikTok to ask our mentees before and after what their thoughts were on a healthy relationship so check that out to hear what they said!

On Monday, our mentees split up into groups to work on their brands. We have 4 mentees who want to start things like clothing brands, baking businesses, stickers, merch, etc. We even had Dakota from Funny Bunny Stickers come down to explain how she creates her own content on an iPad to help with another group. Everyone made a lot of progress in their business and had a lot of fun interacting with one another to get new ideas! We can’t wait to see where they take their exciting ideas and the awesome businesses they will create!

Handlettering Workshop

For the second half of mentorship on Saturday, mentee alumni Amanda Leon, came to TFD to teach our mentees about handlettering. Amanda is self taught in the skill of calligraphy and has turned it into a career since her mentorship in the spring. Handlettering can be done on a variety of objects such as: name tags, mirrors, chalk boards, home decor, pumpkins, and so many other things! In this workshop, the mentees first learned the main rules of handlettering; upstrokes are thin, while downstrokes are thick. Once they did some practicing on paper, the mentees moved on to some wooden pumpkins Amanda brought and came up with their own designs! They turned out great and everyone had fun learning from a past mentee!

In the first workshop from Saturday, our mentees were visited by Robert from Healthy Coin to learn about business. In this workshop, Robert discussed the basics behind creating a business, pricing of products and services, how money works within a business, and supply & demand. They also discussed how that can cause competition between businesses. After the lesson, the mentees got to compete in an exciting and intense game reviewing everything they learned for the day. It was a lot of fun and everyone learned so much!
