Freelensing Workshop

Our mentees participated in a freelensing workshop led by, Adri @adridelacruz_photographer. This workshop was super interesting and gave the mentees complete creative control over their photos. Freelensing is a technique used by photographers where the lense is 1cm away from the camera body, this effect gives the photo a vintage look and a unique blur. Our mentees got to ask questions, take notes, and put their knowledge to use.

Group Project | Food Desert Conversation

A team of five mentees from our summer Mentorship Cohort did a group project on some of the challenges our community faces. In this video/podcast episode, they talked about Maywood being a food desert, as well as what environmental racism is. This podcast was shot, edited, and planned out completely by this group of mentees, with the guidance of Jeremy, a co-founder of The Firehouse Dream who volunteered his time to support this amazing group of young adults. Additionally, Karina, who is the owner of Elevating La Cultura podcast, shared all her tips on how to create, plan, and launch a podcast.

Group Project Mentee Headshots

Our Executive Director Jasmine led this workshop on how to take a proper headshot. Our mentees have learned so much during their time here at The Firehouse Dream, and learning about photography has been one of our main focuses this mentorship. Throughout their 6 weeks here they have grown so much and it has been fun to see their photography skills grow with them.

Thank You Jasmine for leading this workshop!

Podcast Workshop

During this workshop Karina one of our board members came in and led a workshop on how to create a podcast. Karina walked our mentees through essential steps that need to be taken in order to create an effective podcast. Our mentees took what they learned from Karina and used their new podcast knowledge to create a podcast of their own!

Thank you Karina for leading our mentees through this workshop!

The Quinn Center

Our mentees were able to experience taking pictures at the Quinn Center here in Maywood. They took pictures of the kids at the Quinn Center’s annual summer camp and they were able to put into practice what they had been learning from previous workshops. We got tons of great content that showcased their new photography skills!

We are grateful to have collaborated with the Quinn Center!
